Chemically classified as an isoquinoline alkaloid, it is renowned for its striking yellow color and its ability to interact with multiple molecular targets in the body. Modern research has increasingly validated its traditional uses, particularly highlighting its efficacy in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism by activating an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), often referred to as a metabolic master switch. Consequently, berberine supplements have gained popularity for helping lower blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes and reducing cholesterol, offering results comparable to some pharmaceutical drugs.
